Health is much more than a visit to the doctor’s office; it begins where we live, learn, work, and play. By working to create healthier environments throughout the Roanoke Valley, we empower all members of our community to achieve optimal health.

Healthy Roanoke Valley (HRV) is a partnership of more than 50 organizations committed to transforming the way our community thinks about and values health. Our foundation is built on “collective impact” allowing us to address complex issues with high-impact results. As a collective, the Healthy Roanoke Valley partnership focuses on the social determinants of health.

Healthy Roanoke Valley is:

Data-driven. Healthy Roanoke Valley emerged as a community response to the 2012 Community Health Assessment led by Carilion Clinic. Our work is rooted in the triennial assessment results.

Equity-focused. Our goals are focused on ensuring that every member of our community has the resources they need for good health.

Collaborative and community-based. The core of our work, and the success of our partnership, is built upon a common agenda and shared resources to ensure a holistic vision of health in the Roanoke Valley.

“Struggling individuals or families depend on our ability to form a strong and cohesive network of services and support to get them back on track. This takes a tremendous investment of time and a lot of trust-building to introduce this neew way of thinking and change the mindset on what that looks like,” said Abby Verdillo Hamilton, President and CEO of United Way of Roanoke Valley.

Our partnership is made up of the many community organizations that serve on our Action Teams, Steering Committee, and other committees. Our Action Teams were developed based on the priority needs identified in the 2012 Community Health Assessment, and continue to work effectively to meet the current needs of our community.

Strategic Framework

In 2019, we launched our newest Strategic Framework with four shared goals:

1. Reduce barriers to resources that address the social determinants of health.

2. Expand access to quality care and support a culture of health.

3. Encourage and support lifestyle behaviors that result in improved health
and well-being.

4. Support and advocate for natural and built environments that cultivate
vibrant neighborhoods.

Members of the Action Teams collaboratively developed strategies and action steps to meet these goals. To learn more, download our full strategic framework.
